The enzyme, characterized from the marine bacterium Labrenzia aggregata, participates in the biosynthesis of dimethylsulfoniopropanoate (DMSP). A eukaryotic enzyme that shares little sequence similarity with the bacterial enzyme was identified in many marine phytoplankton species.
